We all want to feel like we’re productive, right?!
We want to feel like we make progress towards our goals – may it be that we want to get a grip over our finances, start a side business or just finish sewing that dress we started with a few months ago.
No matter what the goal is, there are some simple steps you can take to help you have a productive week and make real progress on your goals.
1. Sit down and plan
To have a productive week you need to know what needs to get done – what steps will move you forward on your goals. You need to sit down once a week and plan. If you do it Friday afternoon, Sunday evening, Monday morning or anytime in between, it doesn’t matter. But it does matter that you just sit down and do it.
2. Do a reality check
Before you start planning your week there’s one thing you have to do – you have to know how much time you have to play with.
Check what appointments you have, lunch dates, work schedule. Do you have to do grocery shopping and when do you have to get that done? What else will require time from you this coming week? Then map out how much time you have to work on your goal.
3. Set your 3 MIT’s
Deciding on what your three most important tasks (MIT’s) are is major when planning for a productive week.
What three things would propel you forward to reaching your goal? What three things will ensure that you’re on the path of completing the goal?
The MIT’s should always be small-ish tasks, and this is especially important if you in step one realized you don’t have much time.
Let’s take an example… Let’s say your goal is to get a grip on your finances and that one of your MIT’s this week is to set up a budget. I would argue that ”setting up a budget” is too big of a task. It should be drilled down to smaller sub-tasks like: getting an account at an online budget site like mint.com, importing all your spendings for last year, getting an overview of your spending last year, create the budget for this year and so on. It’s this level of tasks you should have in your to-do list and on your MIT list.
