7 Hygge essentials + my own hygge routine

November 3, 2017

A lot of people are talking about the Danish concept of hygge, which very simplistically can be translated to ”conscious coziness”. And what better time of year to focus on coziness than the end of fall, am I right?

7 Hygge Essentials for a cozy fall - By ForeverGoodLife

So, today I wanted to share some tips on how you can incorporate hygge into your everyday life.

As always, remember there are no rules to life. Take this as suggestions and make it your own. You don’t like to read? What does bring you joy? Do that instead. Find your way to incorporate hygge into your life.

Curious what my hygge essentials are? Keep reading till the end to find out.
Now let’s get on with the list of hygge essentials.

1. A Cozy blanket

It doesn’t have to be that you wrap it around you. Just having it placed beautifully in wherever you’re sitting can give the feeling of coziness.

2. A Cup of hot tea

Of course, it doesn’t have to be tea :) Maybe your ideal hygge includes a cup of hot chocolate with some whipped cream on top? But the idea of a hot beverage on a chilly day definitely screams hygge.

3. Candles

Lighting candles is such an easy way to bring coziness to any space. Or just the presence of candles can bring that same coziness, even if you don’t light them.

4. Scents

There are so many scented candles, diffusers and essential oils on the market. For the hygge moment I would suggest you chose something that’s calming and relaxing.

5. Cozy slippers

Ah, putting on a pair of cozy slippers is just so…well, cozy. Definitely something that can give you that sense of hygge.

6. Some Music

Play some soft background music. Maybe some soul, jazz, ballads, rnb? But hey, if heavy metal sets you in the right mood for hygge, go for it!

7. A Good Book

A hygge moment probably wouldn’t be complete without something cozy to do. Reading a book or magazine, looking through a recipe book or why not flipping through an old photo album? If books aren’t your thing, find out what brings you that sense of coziness and do that instead.

My hygge routine

I hope you found some inspiration here to go build your own hygge routine. As for my personal hygge routine, it differs somewhat from what I’ve talked about so far. I tend to do this as part of my morning routine, it’s such a beautiful way to wake up to the day.

  • Cosy blanket or bathrobe

In the fall and winter I love to wrap myself in my super cozy robe from Pelle Vävare.

  • I just LOVE tea

Depending on my mood I’ll either make a cup of green jasmine or black mango/papaya. If you follow me on Instagram you know how much I love my matcha latte, but I prefer to take that later in the morning or after lunch (if you were wondering, which I bet you were ;) )

  • My beloved slippers

I wouldn’t want to go a day without them. I use them ALL THE TIME, not only for my hygge moments. I wasn’t able to find my slippers online (it’s a Swedish brand), but they look something similar to this.

  • What I listen to

I listen to a guided meditation to ground me or a podcast that’ll get me motivated for the day. Sometimes I don’t listen to anything, but those are rare occasions. When it comes to guided meditations, Tara Brach is still one of my go-to sources (and it’s free).

  • Candles

I love the idea of lighting candles, but honestly, sometimes I forget. But I have some beautiful candles that give that cozy feeling just by being there. The ones I’m using at the moment are from IKEA and Orrefors Sweden (I love this one that looks like what I think a rough uncut diamond looks like).

  • Fresh air

I end by opening up a window to get some fresh air into the apartment. I don’t do that before the hygge moment because it’s freezing cold outside and I don’t like to be cold in the morning haha. But I do want to get some fresh air in, so I tend to open the window for ten minutes or so when I’m ready to start my day.

What’s your hygge routine?

Do you have a hygge routine? What do you include when doing your hygge? I’d love to hear, so comment below or over on Instagram.
