For a more in-depth goal setting exercise check out the ’My Big Goals’ workbook where you’ll be asked question to help you get clear on what really matters to you and create a clear action plan to make sure you’ll reach your goals.
1. Spend Quality Time with Friends and Family
This is an old timer, probably on most new years resolution lists all over the world. Challenge yourself to set more specific goals, like who it is you want to spend time with and how often you’d like to spend time with them. Another great idea is to plan it in your calendar, maybe do it each month for the month ahead, so that you know you’ve set aside time to actually do it this year.
2. Become More Active
Think about ways to move your body in everyday life. Whenever you sit down set a timer for 45 minutes. When the alarm goes off you go to the kitchen and drink some water. Or just stand up and stretch for a minute or two. Why not have a goal that whenever you would normally sit down to watch TV you’ll do stretching as well? Of course, it’s always good for our bodies to exercise, get our heart rate up and do strength training so you might want to add that to your list of goals as well.
3. Join a weekly class
Do you love sewing? Painting? Do you want to write a book? Join a group or class where you’ll meet like-minded people and also find accountability. Once you’ve signed up for a weekly painting class you tend to show up, whereas if you decide to just do it yourself at home it’s easier to skip it.
4. Take More Chances
Let this be a year where you try new things, where you take more chances even when you don’t know what it’ll lead to. Sign up for that evening class you’ve been thinking off doing. Maybe apply for another job or role that you think will let you grow.
5. Listen To and Follow Your Intuition
We all have intuition but I think many of us have ignored it for so long that we no longer can hear it. Let 2018 be the year where you do your best to hear that inner voice, and you act on what you hear.
6. Meditate
One of the ways to better hear that inner voice, the intuition, is to quiet down. And one way to quiet down is to practice meditation. Do what suits you best, and if you feel that it just doesn’t feel right – well, try another approach. There are so many ways to practice meditation so don’t give up but instead explore and find the one that works for you.
7. Get 8 Hours of Sleep
Well, the number of hours depends on your body but most of us really do need around 7.5 to 8 hours. It can be a tough goal to reach seven days a week, so to be realistic maybe you should set the goal to 8 hours of sleep at least 3 days a week and then work from there.
8. Watch Less TV
It’s easy to get sucked into watching TV or Youtube for hours on end, especially when we get home from work and we’re tired and feel like we have no more energy left in us. A tip to help you reach this goal, if you chose to set it, is to write down a list of things you could do instead. Things that also doesn’t require too much energy from you. Maybe you pull out that adult coloring book and color for 30 minutes instead? Or read your favorite magazine? Or, for an easy transition maybe you watch some online classes on eg Skillshare instead. Something that teaches you something or inspires you. Ease yourself into not watching as much TV. Set a goal of how many hours you give yourself to watch TV (Youtube etc) in a week and log every hour you do watch. Create a new collection in your planner or BulletJournal to keep track.
9. Ask More Questions
Make it a goal to listen more than you talk. Ask more questions. Make others feel heard. Don’t try to convert the other person to your way of seeing things. Make an effort to understand their point of view instead.
10. Decorate To Reflect Who You Are
As superficial as it sounds, having a place to come home to that you love affects your mood and energy levels. If you love bright colors but your walls are beige since that’s ”the common color for walls”, well maybe it’s time to change it up. Or if you’re a huge Star Wars fan but keep all your Star Wars stuff in the closet, why not bring them out? Don’t be afraid to make your home personal, make it your own!
What will your goals be?
Now the question is, what goals will you be setting for 2018? How do you make sure you keep them top-of-mind as the months keep moving forward? I have a few tricks that I use to make sure I don’t forget, maybe I should write a blog post about that in the near future? Let me know if you’d be interested :)
